" The wise won't accept within the threshold of their house any money of suspicious origin: they won't refuse, however, neither will they reject the great wealth’s gift of the fortune and fruit of the virtue " This quote, from the philosopher and Latin writer Seneca (4BC - 65AD), begins to explain the origins and history of the name "The Cagliarese". Sardinian traditions are full of references to pagan rites, focusing on fate omens, and superstition. Among the many traditions, one that stands out above the rest is that related to legacies surrounding the building, since the house of ownership has always been considered the most important possession for the inhabitants of the island.
For example, in order to respect some customs, no jobs were able to be started in the days of Tuesday or Friday, or in the months of May and August, since this was considered bad luck. It was also thought that throwing a coin into the foundations of the house would bring good fortune to its residents.
During the reconstruction of the stable (which now houses the Bed and Breakfast), a coin, named the "cagliarese", was found within the flooring. This coin is likely to have been thrown there with the intention of warding off bad spirits and bring good luck.
This discovery indicates that the stable was in fact built during the 18th century (not the 20th century as was originally thought), and is the reason behind the name of the ‘il Cagliarese’ bed and breakfast. Like our ancestors hundreds of years ago, we like to believe that this coin has indeed brought luck, good fortune, prosperity and joy and invite all to experience and be part of this Sardinian tradition.
